The Nusantara Battery, a graphene-infused lithium-ion pouch cell co-developed by Malaysia and Indonesia, made its public debut at the 4th ASEAN Battery Technology Conference in Sepang today.

Market Impact

Jointly led by NanoMalaysia Bhd’s subsidiary Gigafactory Malaysia Sdn Bhd and Indonesia’s National Battery Research Institute, the project pairs Malaysia’s graphene and cell-design expertise with Indonesia’s NMC active-material production, harnessing the world’s largest nickel reserves.

Two prototypes were unveiled, but NanoMalaysia said energy density, capacity and charging characteristics remain untested pending full validation. Dr Rezal Khairi Ahmad, CEO of NMB Group, said the collaboration proves “no single organisation can build a competitive battery industry alone.”

The effort began after both countries signed a memorandum of understanding at ABTC 2025, covering technology transfer, joint research, standards, education and training. Gigafactory Malaysia has already begun small-scale commercial output of graphene-enhanced lithium-ion cells, according to Dr Rezal. He said a vehicle battery pack using the cells can deliver up to 640 km of range and recharge fully in 12 minutes.

NMB Group also announced new partnerships at the conference with Montavista Energy Technologies Corporation, Axium Industries, Milan Utama Sdn Bhd, Neoron Energy Network and Arya Energy Sdn Bhd.
