Malaysia, Indonesia Unveil Jointly Developed Nusantara Battery at ASEAN Conference

Market Impact

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia and Indonesia have unveiled the Nusantara Battery, a graphene-infused lithium-ion pouch cell developed through a collaboration between NanoMalaysia Bhd (NMB) and Indonesia’s National Battery Research Institute (NBRI). The battery was officially revealed at the 4th ASEAN Battery Technology Conference (ABTC) in Sepang, showcasing prototypes of the NMC-based power pack.

The Nusantara Battery leverages Malaysia’s expertise in graphene technology and battery formulation, while Indonesia contributed its nickel resources and NMC active-material production capabilities. Specific technical details, including energy density, capacity, and charging characteristics, remain undisclosed as the prototypes have not undergone full testing.

NMB Group CEO Dr Rezal Khairi Ahmad emphasized the importance of regional collaboration, stating that no single organization can build a competitive battery industry alone. "ASEAN’s greatest strength lies in complementing each other’s capabilities to build a more integrated and resilient regional battery value chain," he said. The project was initiated under a memorandum of understanding signed at ABTC 2025, outlining technology transfer, joint research, and standardization efforts.

Separately, NMB’s subsidiary Gigafactory Malaysia Sdn Bhd (GMSB) has begun small-scale commercial production of a graphene-enhanced lithium-ion battery. GMSB claims its battery cells can enable electric vehicles to achieve a driving range of up to 640 km and be fully charged in 12 minutes. NMB also announced new collaborations with Montavista Energy Technologies Corporation, Axium Industries, and other firms at the conference.
